Resume Workshop Proposal

Resumes are the way we, initially, present ourselves professionally, so creating one for the first time can be a daunting task for a student. It may also be challenging for professors, staff, and other professionals to update and form a pleasing, effective resume that grabs the potential employer's attention. This workshop will give everyone the tools they need to put together a basic resume, as well as the information necessary to assist others in resume creation.

The topics covered (broken down in detail further on) will include differing viewpoints on resume length and how profession and discipline affect that; how to choose appropriate language that enhances the reader's perception of your skillset; and ways to create a stylistically pleasing document that uses font, white space, and emphasis effectively. To accomplish this, I will provide resume samples to view, and explain each element's importance as well as describe different ways to accomplish the goals I outlined above. Also, I will also spend 1/3 of the session on actual resume creation/adaption so that attendees may put the skills they are learning to use immediately, thereby retaining more of the information provided.

The session will last approximately an hour and thirty minutes with allowances made for some questions. I will require that each attendee bring an electronic copy of their resume or the information needed to create one.

Overview of topics to be covered in workshop:

* Different types of resumes

o One page vs. two page resume

o How profession, position, and experience play a role

o Including an objective
