What does it mean to be an American?

Being an American is one of the greatest feelings one can have and also embrace. From its traditions and its values, to its work force that gives Americans the opportunity and ability to work plus create jobs to support a family. America does have its pros and cons but clearly the pros outweigh the cons. Being an American gives you that sense of pride to stand up tall and be proud for what your country is all about. America gives me the hope of encouragement when all hope is gone. America gives me the motivation to continue on when I am weary. America is the greatest country in the world. Wouldn't you like to be an American?

As a child, sitting at my mother's window staring at the other children playing outside is when I noticed the roles of police officers. What I learned from them at a young age were the responsibilities they bare on their shoulders such as protecting the lives of innocent people, apprehending criminals, providing justice for all. Acknowledging that at a young age provided me insight on possible career possibilities I was willing to go forward with. As I aged and enrolled in college I am in pursuit of a criminal justice degree to become a prosecutor of New Jersey. America showed me that our general safety is our main priority and it is something we must defend regardless of the criticism we made receive or the circumstances we face.

Living in America has made me remain focused on my goals and dreams. If you were to look around the world, what country can provide you hope to have a good education? What country can provide you a workforce to provide not only for yourself but for your children? What country relies on its superior military force to defend it from terrorism? We do because Americans relies on these basic necessities to live peacefully as a nation. Many third world countries cannot provide these basic needs for its people nor can they defend themselves from enemies.

Recently, I had watched a show on television where the boss pretends to be an entry level worker to see how hard it is for employees who worked specific jobs at the company. This one man from the Middle East escaped his country and walked days in the desert with no food and water made it to Saudi Arabia and was captured and placed as a refugee. As the show continues he states, he has seen or spoke to his family in seven years or so. Upon release he set out to come to America and find a job to have his family come and stay with him. My point is, most countries do not have the luxury that we have and for that must be appreciative and grateful for what we have.
