Olivia Mitchell gives us the brief interpretation of the Mehrabian's research at the beginning. The research which aimed to find how the words , tone of voice and body language influencing the process of conveying message, is the foundation of Mehrabian formula. Mehrabian thinks that the overall effect of the information = 7% words +38% tone +55% facial expressions and movements. Human beings always transmit information by language and non-language symbols.
From the article, we can easily get an idea of the Olivia Mitchell's opinion. That is ,he shows some suspicion to the Mehrabian formula. Based on what he knows, Olivia Mitchell thinks that the formula can be only applicable if a speaker is using only one word, their tone of voice is inconsistent with the meaning of the word, and the judgment being made is about the feelings of the speaker. And since the reality is more complicated, what the phenomenon Mehrabian said, may not exist in most case.
From my point of view, I would like to express my opinion that Mehrabian formula can be reasonable in some case. We have no illusions but believe that human beings always transmit information by language and non-language symbols. Namely , the conveying of the imformation may rely mostly on the body language ,tone of voice to the second and the words last. For instance, for the people faced with babies who can't speak and may not fully understand what the adults said , therefore ,they can only depend on the body language to get to know what the adults want to express .
However , the reality sometimes don't always anastomose the theory. That is ,the formula may not reflect the real occasions .let's set an example. When a teacher who want to impart the knowledge to the students, he must make the most of the verbal express. Otherwise, the students may not comprehend the knowledge in an all-round way.
Last but not least , Mehrabian formula can be meaningful sometimes. It can be an urger who require us take a notice of what we said , how high the voice we use and how we behave properly in communicating.
