Chapter 1: Case - Fast-Food Feast (page 18). Answer all 7 questions in textbook and then consider:
Visit at least 2 different fast food restaurants that make hamburgers. Observe the basic operational differences between these stores. Note the difference in the following processes: I choose McDonald's and Burger King
1) How are orders taken?
Both restaurants showed good customer service by greeting me with "can I help you."
2) Are the hamburgers prepared to order or are they prepared ahead of time and delivered from a storage bin?
McDonalds: made when ordered
Burger King: since it was during lunch hour rush, it was actually prepared and sitting in the heat shute.
3) How are special orders handled?
Both restaurants took special orders and made the way you want it,
4) How are the hamburgers cooked?
McDonalds taste like it was cooked with a skillet. I really couldn't see. It was like the meat was already cooked and sitting in a heat shute. Burger King was cooked with a broiler.
5) How are the hamburgers assembled?
It looked like they were assembled in some type of order for both restaurants.
6) Is a microwave used in the process?
McDonalds: No
Burger King: Yes, they nuked the meat and bottom bun.
7) How are other common items such as french fries and drinks handled?
Same for both when it came to french fries. Cooked in a fryer, shake when done and placed in a heat tray under a lamp and one long swipe of salt.
Drinks were handled differently. Burger King actually had to do by hand, and McDonald's had some type rotary method. Where it automatically moved the cups.
Question 8: Which process is the most efficient and why?
I would say both were effecient, because the results ended the same.
Question 9: Which competitive dimensions (pages 25-27) has each firm selected for their process and which focus dimensions have they traded-off?
Since I still do not have my textbook, I cannot refer to page 25-27 to better understand this question.
