I think this chapter introduces us to a different Charlie. It starts with Charlie being found passed out in the snow because he took LSD. It makes me think about Charlie's personality, from my point of view he is definitely a passive-aggressive teenager who is going through a lot. If the book had ended in chapter 2, I think it might had left me feeling sorry for Charlie, but as I continue reading I have mixed feelings.
An example of what I mean when I say Charlie is passive-aggressive is his relationship with Mary Elizabeth. A new character introduced by Chbosky, which I loved because I think it has helped me figure out Charlie a little bit more. Mary Elizabeth is a girl who is out there, which I found funny because Charlie is a wallflower. What I can learn from this relationship is that Mary Elizabeth is thrilled to be with Charlie, she talks to him, tell him about her plans, etc. but the truth is Charlie doesn't care. And instead of talking to her about it he just plays along even though he can't stand this relationship, I mean how sick do you have to be to stay in a relationship you don't even want.
The part when they are playing truth or dare just annoys me. Was it really Charlie's honest innocence that night? Or was it his passive-aggressive personality? The way he humiliates Mary Elizabeth under the premise that he doesn't want to lie anymore to anyone is just non-sense.
"Then again, if you were gay, I wouldn't date you. You're a mess"1 Patrick tells Charlie this after dropping him off in his house, after what happened at Craig's just proved everyone how messed up he is. The chapter ends by Charlie calling Bob to buy some pot, this was just the cherry to my pie, instead of dealing and facing life, he once again is hiding. Are these the perks of being a wallflower? I hope not.
