The reasons for Tesco's success were that Korea eased its law on governing direct foreign investment. There was also a demand for modern shopping experiences. Tesco entered the market in 1999 and entered into a joint venture with the Samsung group.
The benefits of a joint venture can offer:
1. access to new markets and distribution networks
2. increased capacity
3. sharing of risks and costs with a partner

This joint venture gave Tesco an in depth knowledge of the market and allowed them to acquire the best store locations. They also began trading under the already established name of Homeplus which was previously set up by Samsung.
