Troy's Analogy of the fence
The play Fences by August Wilson is told back in the 1950's in Pittsburg Pennsylvania. This play is acted in a house of black Americans trying to find a place in this world. Troy is the main character, with a wife named Rose and a son named Corey. This family is kept together by the metaphor of the fence being built around the house. Rose asks for Troy to build a fence around the house to symbolize the love and nurturing of her family. However the character's life's change around the time of the fence building . The fence represents the relationships that bond and break the household. The play Fences compare to another African American play called Crowns .Crowns ia an African American play acted in a home as well as a church . This play is written by Regina Taylor and performed at Morgan State University. Crowns tells a story of six African American woman raised through the hats they wear to church. The main character in this play is a young black girl from Brooklyn named Yolanda. Specific metaphors used in Crowns and Fences relay a strong implication on the Racial Secregation , Parental responsibility , and Family moral values through African Americans.
African Americans are known popular victims of racial segregation , especially back in troy and yolandas time . The play Fences is wrote it a time where blacks were trying to find a place in the world . With racial descrepencies still being a trouble between black and whites it becomes hard for a African American to gain respect . Troy is a hard working man that works as a garbage lifter and has been working as one for a long time . However he does notice that other whites around him are getting promotions to be a garbage truck driver and his isn't. Its takes him to ask his boss why only the white men are truck drivers , soon after troy does become a truck driver . The dilemma is that it takes him to ask in order to become a worker that gets paid more. Racial segregation is also a trouble in the play Crowns the main character Yolanda. Yolanda is a African American teenage girl raised in Brooklyn newyork . Her brothers death causes her parents to send her down south to live with her aunt. When Yolanda starts school the whites are looking at her as if she is from another earth. Her Brooklyn style from her accent to her clothes is the reason she is made fun of. Metaphors thoughout each of these plays take a strong toll on how the lives of these African Americans play out.
A hat is a strong metaphor of symbolism used in the play Crowns. In this play a hats tell a story of African Americans through there hats. Although racial segregation is a strong factor in these womans lives there crowns remind them of who they are. Yolanda crown is a a red baseball hat that shows who she is . She dosent care about what others think of her outside of her hat .
