5th Amendment

Importance to American Society.

Two very important rights are protected by the 5th Amendment. One says that the federal government cannot take private property for public use without just compensation the other is the due process which requires the government to provide "due process" before depriving any person of life, liberty or property. The 5th protects more than those rights, but those are two very significant and broad rights.

Without the 5th and the other amendments of the Bill of Rights, the government could arbitrarily deprive citizens of fundamental human rights and freedoms.

You have a right not to testify against yourself in any criminal trial, you can't be tried for the same thing twice. Witness against yourself, or be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation. These are rights not spelled out in the original Constitution! If we didn't have these you could be picked up for anything, be held without charges for as long as they wanted, never going before a court or a jury of your peers.

These are essential human rights, 5th Amendment
