A structure is something that is made up of certain elements, in this case the people and resources that influence each other and that gives rise to different types of behavior . Most often this is an organizational structure not designed in advance, it starts small and grows then great . A good structure facilitates the stability of the organization and makes it possible to utilize the organization's resources to the max .

A functional structure of the division of work into focus. Functional structures are often found in traditional organizations . In a functional organization such structured groups for knowledge or processes. One risk of this structure is that groups can easily have their own goals and to prioritize the organization's interests.

A divisionaliserad structure means that one has independent business units operating under the larger organization . The units in a divisionell structure is self-supporting and are usually divided into geographical divisions , product divisions , or by customer group. They all are themselves responsible for their products , but the activities are coordinated from the top. The downside is that some activities are duplicated in the various divisions .

Matrix structures using both the functional and divisional fundamental structure . The matrix structure will then have a dual chain of command , often leading to internal conflicts.

Network structure abandons all formal ties between organizations and be replaced with partnerships and relationships with them. This kind of organization are often found in industries where technological progress is fast and the product lifecycle is short. In a network structure that helps organizations together with resources and assets so that the actual production unit is basically the entire network.

Virtual structures in organizations can be described as organizations that are geographically dispersed but whose members are bound together by a common long-term goal and that communicate and coordinate activities with the help of information technologies. A distinguishing feature of virtual organizations is the high level of informal communication . Historically occurred communicating mainly through the distribution of e -mails. Nowadays there are also many other ways to communicate which facilitates horizontal communication and leaves little room for hierarchies , roles and status.

Boundless organizations are more team - oriented . There are no horizontal boundaries and the flexibility and responsiveness are high. Boundless organizations like other organizations step in and form partnerships such as Joint Ventures. One of the biggest benefits for an organization like this is that there is hardly any external barriers. General Electric was one of the first companies that used this particular structure.

As more and more businesses are expanding their operations abroad , so does the need for other organizational structures
