Alcohol consumption among young people is widespread. The "binge-drinking" is very common among young Australians and French. Alcohol is the cause of most deaths related to drugs in the adolescent population in France and Australia. Twenty-five percent of young Australians aged between fourteen and nineteen years drink alcohol at least once a week. In addition, ninety percent of young Australian who fourteen years or more have tried alcohol at least once and often like to get drunk.
I think it's a good idea that the French government banned the sale of alcohol to youth under age eighteen. In the past, teenagers could buy alcohol at service stations during the night. However, adolescents who are over 18 can still buy alcohol for young friends.
This often happens in Australia too. For example, a Saturday night, many of my friends go out with friends older and alcoholic beverages they buy for them and they get drunk together. They are fun, but in fact it is very dangerous.
Drinking alcohol can affect how the brain develops in young adults under the age of 25. Young people under 15 years of age are particularly at risk. Teenage brains are still developing and the areas of the brain that are undergoing the most dramatic changes during the teenage years are the frontal lobe and hippocampus. These areas are associated with motivation, impulse control and addiction.
In short, alcohol abuse of young people are very serious social problems at home and Australia. There are many fatalities due to these problems, so the governments of France and Australia have to find solutions.
