During the late 18th century, the thirteen colonies tried to free themselves from the British Empire. All thirteen colonies combined to create, what is now the United Stares of America. They joined together to defend there self governance. They were defending them selves from the British army. This war was known as the Revolutionary War. After many acts the war was over. The thirteen colonies declared their independence on a letter that they signed. It is called the Declaration of Independence. On July 4, 1776 was the day that we were granted our independence. The War was officially over in October of 1781. But during this time there were many acts and conflicts.
One of the acts was the Townshend acts and the tea act. It all started in 1767, when the Parliament passed the Townshend act. It put taxes on numerous things. Some boing paper, glass, and tea. Because of this the colonist organized a boycott of British goods. On March 5, 1770 a large mob surrounded British soldiers. They they through rocks, snow balls, and debris at the soldiers. One soldier fired off a round that started a big fight. At the end of this many were injured and a few died. This was later known as the Boston Massacre. On December 16, 1773, John Adams led a group of men dressed as American Indians on to a ship. It's cargo was tea from the British East India Company. While on the ship they dumped a large quantity of the tea into the harbor. This is known as the Boston Tea Party.
During this time revolutionaries were called patriots, Whigs, Congress-man or Americans. Thanks to these people, we as Americans have our own independence. We wouldn't be where we are now it those thirteen colonies haven't done what they done. Without them America would still be ruled by the British empire. Although women weren't shown as very heroic people and were found as useless back then. Women actually played a big role during this revolution. During the wars a few women would run around giving the wounded, or dehydrated solders water and tended to there needs. Also during the boycott they went back to hand knitting cloths because of the revolt agains the taxes.
