The purpose of Arthur Miller writing The Crucible was to show the idea of a theocratic society, a society in which the church and state governments are not separate during the McCarthyism era. The Theocratic (nature) of the Salem city means that the laws of the church and the laws of the state were the same. Sin and one's "soul status" are public matters and they can affect the well being of the public community. Under the Theocratic government, there are no winners or losers, just humans who were put to these tragic deaths. If there was a confessed witch, they got punished as well as the accused who did not confess. Theocracy is dangerous and puts innocent people to death and letting the guilty free.
In a Theocracy, the government is overpowered by God himself. That makes it hard for the truth to stand because there cannot be second views from the leaders in the city about what is right or wrong. The people distrust the government because that cannot prove any direction from God. Miller shows that when the people in Salem have suspicions of Parris and Judge Danforth. Danforth says. "A person is either with this court or he must be counted against it, there can be no road between." During the trials, most citizens felt powerless and kept to themselves.
There is no way to know what the suspects were feeling because no one else was in their shoes on trial day when they knew that there couldn't be a way to prove them innocent. There were only lies being told from some people in town that are trying to save themselves and physical proof, so the government's actions were because of their citizens' words and faith. Abigail was one that told lies when she was the first one who started witchcraft and tells the girls to never say a word. Then, she runs around and accuses people that have nothing to do with it just so she can stay safe.
There is no government that is as unstructured as a Theocratic. In a Theocracy, it feels like there is no government because of no leadership. Theocracy is so horrifying that it could wipe out an entire. It all started when John told his wife about Giles Corey getting executed. More were to come and every single person was living on edge once news spread about witchcraft. Soon enough, people were getting killed or sent to prison for no reason. In The Crucible, Theocracy was the main form of government. Through the play, there were multiple examples showing how Theocracy was very destructive. All of the innocent people put to death were a result of the beliefs and government. Miller described not just what the trials were like but it also showed how devastating Theocracy can be. It has no structure and it is unjust.
