- Some writers like to tackle character studies before writing even a word of the book. Some like to start free writing, dive into a book, figure things out and develop the characters as they go. Which way of literary writing do you prefer? Why?
In my opinion,I prefer the way of free writing ,diving into a book, figuring things out and developing the characters as they go. Authors can express and convey their emotions, messages through their characters easily. No tackling characters studies before that makes the writers not be affected by any other thoughts from other writes as the style of building characters’ personality, appearance,... Moreover, authors write as if they were the main characters in their stories.Incidents, activities events,.. around the main character are the authors’ lives, they use them as a mean of acknowledging about their society. Therefore, readers feel truthfully once reading. This way helps authors have more creativity in writing, leads many unexpected events to occurs even if authors can’t predict, which raises more dramatic for the story.
2. List out as many methods of characterization
Methods of characterization in literature:
-Disclosure of character through stereotyping.
- Disclosure of character through exposition
- Disclosure of character through character’s actions
- Disclosure of character through character’s words
- Disclosure of character through character’s thoughts
- Disclosure of character through words of others.
- Disclosure of character through the use of setting
Our group prefer disclosure of character through the character’s thoughts because this method is considered as one of the most “adventurous” and richest sources for insight into motivation and character. In this method, the character is let to talk to himself through such devices as interior monologue and stream of consciousness, therefore he cannot lie to himself. The character will tell the truth about himself. The character will reveal all his hidden emotions and aspects of identity, his state of mind, motives, intentions, dream, innermost feeling and perception. So this technique is the best way to help readers comprehend the character’s nature. However, this technique is difficult to write because it requires the author’s talent and skill in understanding human’s psychology.
3. Choose a short literary work and analyze some types of character and some ways the writer develop characters.
The story of an hour – Kate Chopin
- Mrs. Mallard (Louise): A round character
- The main character.
- She's a complex character, almost the whole story is about the development in her mind
- At first after hearing about her husband's death, she was sad and went to her room alone. After the grief, she felt the tiredness, “pressed down by a physical exhaustion that haunted her body and seemed to reach into her soul.”
- The author then described Mrs. Mallard actions as she looked through the window and then cried again.
