We all agree that the reading is too vague and does not focus on any specific point. We found the Badaracco book to be difficult to read. It is poorly written, and it is difficult to differentiate when he is being analytical and when he is trying to assert his own opinion. The book in many ways takes an extremely long time to describe and illustrate the structure that Badaracco tries to portray. We believe that a more condensed version where he gets to the point would be far more useful.
We were in agreement in many ways that while the book is clearly well structured, that the excessive content hindered us from obtaining many learnings. We are already inundated with lots of reading, and in these situations do not have the luxury to read the book in greater detail. Because of Badaracco's inability to remain succinct and to the point, and because it was difficult to decipher when Badaracco was describing the Political leader and what he believes we should really be as leaders, our team was not sure what to take away from each chapter. Am I supposed to be a political leader? What elements of political leadership should I take?
All that being said, we appreciate the dilemmas that he tries to present. We do believe that we will run into more situations, and that our dilemmas may not be able to be so neatly structured. We also think that integrity should not be a quest for leaders but a fundamental skill within their repertoire. It is clear that a good leader has integrity and knows how and when to be flexible about it.
