Question #1

While exploring O*net I found it to be very easy navigating through the site and getting exactly where I need to be. When you first get on the site there are several things that let you know this is the right site for occupational information. There is a "About O*net" tab that takes you to a page that informs individuals about the site in great detail. It lets you know that this program provides extensive information on thousands of occupations for job seekers, workforce development offices, human resources professionals, students, researchers, and others. The site has many other tools like: Content Model, O*NET Taxonomy, Green Economy and so forth. It overall is a great site with many ways to find whatever information on any occupation. There was an abundance of information about the occupation that I was interested in, which was Information Technology.

When searching for an occupation on the "my next move" page, I searched for job information about Information Technology. What I found was a very detailed page with all sorts of information about the jobs in that field and what it required of me to do those jobs. My occupation was listed as "Computer & Information Systems Manager". The site also listed alternate names for the position. There was a description on what I would have to do when filling that position, let me know what "On the job" duties I would have, and listed what knowledge, skills, and abilities are needed in order to get this type of job. It even went as far as telling me what type of personality I would need to be an IT manager. It said I need to be dependable, have integrity, be flexible, know how to cooperate and be a thinker. I also know what the average salary is for this occupation and the level of education required. All of this is found on this one site and can be so helpful to anyone trying to know exactly what they need, for whatever job they dream of.

As an HR professional, it would be very helpful and resourceful using O*NET to conduct a job analysis for any position in my organization. The site is so informative that it would be so easy to look up any position in the company we are trying to analyze. I would simply search the site for the occupation of interest, look at the requirements of that position, and find the best possible person for the job. I could match up there resume and analyze their information on hand. This would honestly save time perhaps some money and allow the organization and HR make the best possible decision when hiring someone for the job. It would also be helpful for current employees because it would allow the company to see what skills they might be lacking and what steps we could take to make everyone better. O*NET is a great tool for assisting a company and HR professional
