Through dance Billy creates his own identity and breaks out of the expectations of his family and community, such as the family tradition of being a miner.
Acceptance and understanding are necessary for us to experience a sense of belong. In the scene Jackie's decision to support Billy on becoming a male ballet dancer shows his total change in attitude, from reject it to accept it. The long tracking shot of Jackie's walking slowly along the mine conveys determination, and the grey background symbolized the idea of isolation from his mining community. The close up of Jackie's face showed us the tightened Jaw, also support the idea of his determination. Jackie's looking towards the sea symbolized he sees hope as Billy's future. The following shot of Jackie's sitting on the other side of the bus also showed us the not belong from the "scabs" either. His idea of going back to work, builds a new connection of the family, on the other hand, he has weakened the relationships with miners, as he also weakened the connection between tony. In the scene as tony said "we'll find a way", also showed Tony has accept the idea of Billy's dream, a new brotherhood relationship has been built. By the hugging of Tony and Jackie we can say a new connection has also been built. As a result, Jackie's feeling a sense of guilt as he abandoned the mining mates. He chooses to be a father as a more important identity than the mining group.
