For the first example, we are going to say that in Virginia we have observed that an increasing number of frogs are dying. We also observe that the forests are being destroyed. After making these observations, we ask ourselves what is causing our frogs and trees to die? We know that frogs are very sensitive to acid rain, so we are able to come up with a hypothesis. The levels of acid rain are causing our frogs and trees to die. This would be my hypothesis. In order to prove my hypothesis one way or another, I need to conduct an experiment. I would begin by testing the pH level on the acid rain. I would also need to figure out when our frogs and trees began to die off in larger numbers. Once I can determine if the frogs and trees began dying off when acid rain increased then I can prove that my hypothesis is correct or incorrect I will have my answer.

For the second example, we are going to say that we are trying to figure out the cause of our dying forests. We know that acid rain plays a big part on our environment. So we ask ourselves the question, is acid rain causing our forests to die? After asking ourselves this question we will form a hypothesis. Acid rain is directly causing our forests to die. To prove this hypothesis one way or the other, we will conduct an experiment. We start by planting trees in two different locations. We will plant 50 trees in northern Tennessee and 50 trees in southern Tennessee. The trees will be planted in the exact same way. We will test the pH levels of the acid rain in both areas. The pH level in northern Tennessee was 4.2 and the pH level in southern Tennessee was 4.7. After leaving the trees to be watered by the acid rain from their area, we will go back and check the progress. We noticed that the amount of trees that were still surviving in northern Tennessee were less than the amount still surviving in southern Tennessee. This would then prove that my hypothesis was correct and after proving it over and over it would become a theory.
