Peer pressure can be both positive and negative. But, most people believe that peer pressure can only be a harmful thing. However, it can be a big positive influence in your life. For example, if you have a group of friends that just despise smokers, as one of their friends, you will most likely stay away from smoking because of the fact that your friends also hate smokers. In that example, if your friends hated smoking, by trying to fit in with your friends, you would follow along with them. But, even though there is positive peer pressure, there is of course negative peer pressure. Negative peer pressure can happen when you are associated with bad people around you and you learn from example. For example, if all of your friends sneak into a movie, you could learn from their example and go in with them. People do this sometimes because it is very hard to resist peer pressure. This is because when you are a teenager, you don't want to be the black sheep and not do what your friends are doing. You want to fit in so you just do what people tell you to do.
It is important to resist doing something dangerous or illegal because doing something dangerous or illegal can lead to consequences. If you do something dangerous, the consequences could be the slow deterioration of your health or the immediate consequence of death. If you do something illegal, the obvious consequence is going to jail. Even though it is difficult, avoiding negative peer pressure is very important.
