Business Ethics Assignment

The decision for Benji Watson to sign a recruiting contract after his weekend invite with New Gen Health Sciences (NGHS) is simple to answer when we look at the facts and issues presented through a spiritual/ethical perspective. Had Mr. Watson not had several national corporations recruiting him, the outcome of this decision might have been different. But since we know more recruiting offers were available to Mr. Watson, we will critically think through the facts and issues involving his decision to work for New Gen Health Sciences and come to a conclusion.

What are the facts? When Mr. Watson was diligent in researching NGHS while waiting for his flight, he discovered some pros and cons about NGHS that could out weigh the other during his research on the Internet. NGHS was a featured company in Fortune Magazine, had a great financial record, an extensive research program, and was being lead by a CEO who's "mission" was to make a healthier America all through an industry leading ethic's code.

On the downside, Mr. Watson discovered several argumentable issues against the company that could change his decision to become an employee of NGHS. The company CEO in his past had a track record of building up a business only to turn around and sell it for a profit. Some people in the business field might not see this as an issue but more of an entrepreneur who has continued success establishing a company only to turn it over to a more qualified person where the company had continued success.

Another issue with NGHS, relating more to a believers perspective, involved the charitable division of NGHS and their contributions to Planned Parenthood, the ALCU, and other various "progressive" causes. But in corporate America, we should reason with caution when trying to understand charitable contributions of a company. In John Dobson's paper, "Virtue Ethics as a Foundation for Business Ethics: A "MacIntyre-Based" Critique", addressed the following:

We must exercise great caution, therefore, when interpreting the motivation behind apparently benevolent corporate actions such as cooperation, charitable giving, or the development of corporate credos or codes of conduct.

The last issue discovered by Mr. Watson through Internet research came from a questionable source. NGHS had been a topic of discussion on a "gripe site" accused of driving their distributors into bankruptcy through business practices and their company ties they had with each of their distributors. Questionably, the source of where the information was coming could have been making an assumption due to other factors involved including the mention of slow economic times. Another argument is the purpose of the "gripe site". The definition of a "gripe site" is a type of website devoted to the critique and or mockery of a person, place, politician, corporation, or institution. They are also known as "complaint" or "sucks" sites . Under the Constitution of America, the First Amendment of the Bill of Rights gives citizens freedom of expression, which consists of the rights to freedom of speech . However, this freedom does not guarantee the accuracy
