Do you have a cell phone? Most people do. They have come a long way since they were first introduced to the world. When cell phones first came out, only the people who had more money had them. The lower class did not. Today, people can see a 10-year-old to a 100-year old have a phone. Without cell phones most people would be lost. They keep their daily plans, pictures, and music on a simple but complicated device. Teenagers use cell phones to talk to their friends all day long, every day of the week. Adults use them to get a hold of their kids and to use for business.

Cell phones can either save your life, or threaten it. Kelly Emerson, 14-years-old, got lost in the jungle. She was hiking with her mom and some friends. Kelly was frightened, scared, crying, hungry and in a tree when they found her more than three hours later. She had her cell phone with her at all times and that is how they found her. However, let's say a wife left her husband, if he was smart enough, he could get on the computer and track her down by her cell phone. People are not sure if they like how anyone can track where they are, at anytime of the day. This subject is still a topic in the Federal Communications Commission (Caudilla).

In 1895, Italian physicist Guglielmo Marconi sent signals at a distance of 1.5 miles. In 1896, he was granted the world's first wireless telegraphy system. Then in 1897, Marconi formed the Wireless Telegraph and Signal Company. Same year he sent signals at a new distance of twelve miles. Then in 1901, he proved the curve of the earth did not effect the sending of wireless wave signals. Also in 1901, Marconi sent a text from Cornwall, England to St. Johns, Newfoundland; 2,000 miles away (Ruplinger).

Cell phones were first invented in the early 1900s. In 1932, the worlds first microwave radiotelephone link was made between the Popes summer home in Caster Gandolfo, Italy to Vatican City, Italy; about thirty miles away. Car phones were first invented in 1949; it was called Mobile Telephone Service (MTS). The MTS was difficult to use. You could not talk and listen at the same time; you had to push a button to talk then release to listen. This model later became known as the Walky Talky. In 1922, 400 miles way from the shore, the first ship-to-shore Radio Conversation was made by the S.S. American (Ruplinger).

When the telephone was first invented and people had them in their home, they were not direct-dialed. When picking up the phone to call someone, the person would get an operator working for the telephone service they had. Then the person would begin to tell the operator who they want to talk to, the city they live in and their number. After that, they would direct the persons call to the person they are trying to contact. By the 1960s, this model of the telephone improved, but not by much. By the early 1980s, the telephones had full capacity; you could listen and talk at the same time (Ruplinger). Cell
