Australia the show play written by Aidan Fennessy, performed at the MTC lawler studio was an excellent non-naturalistic play. The trio of the very talented performers brought to life the story of Australia. It was an amazing play; it had a lot of dramatic element. Captivating story plot was the reason many people enjoyed it and the presence of satire made it even better. Overall it got as good as any play could get. The way each of the characters in the play reflected a unique perspective of Australian culture was amazing.
At start we are introduced two of the talented trio, Leslie Barrymore Lockett a local English man who is determined to make Australia the show "a dignified show". Who is joined by Owen who is Leslie's "mate" there to make help him in the task, but in the way proving it to be a little difficult? Owens's character was a mix of laconic witty proper Australian bloke. And then they are joined by Terry an indigenous Australian who was there to help do the sound effect and music performance of the show or rather described by Leslie to do that. Together they start the journey of Australia the show through the "space jump".
The play start with Leslie and Owen showing the map of Australia with a G-string placed over Tasmania. The show immediately captivates us to the incredible journey through Australia the show. The way the story starts with the story of dreamtime and Captain Cook coming to Australia is an incredible start. The way the explorers make a journey through Australia through Gold fields, Federation, Anzacs, Sydney Olympics e.t.c. is amazing. Australia the show is the story of Leslie, a British man of theater, his costar Owen and so called assistance Terry. Leslie in the show has written a story which will capture the story of Australia in 90 minutes. It is showed to be a limited budget production for which Leslie and Owen do most of the acting, while Terry creates the sound and the musical effect of the show. But while the show goes on Owen and Terry make fun of poncy Leslie, which in a funny way shows the ongoing battle of Australia towards motherland. People can't help but join in the fun when Owen brings out the loan mower and when they jump towards the crowd. This makes the play tilt towards Non-naturalism style. Most part of the story the Burke and Will's story, which questions mate ship and Burke's love for his wife Julia. The Story as a whole questions "What does it mean to be an Australian?" Throughout the story we see Owens's back story as well as Leslie's back story. Leslie has his vision of the show. But his accounts seem to have many flaws as he tries to show many things which can symbolize when he tries to light the fire but instead show the site of masturbation. Spencer and Drandic clearly revel in their hi-jinks like a pair of naughty schoolboys and play off each other's comedic talents with ease. Unfortunately
