The idea of one being able to choose the sex of their child has not always been available. This issue did not come about until recently because we have the technology to perform this very act of determining the sex of a child before deciding to have one. Some people feel that a person should be able to choose the gender of their child and other people think that we should not be able to because they feel society is inferring with nature and it is unnatural. Some couples would like to be able to choose whether they want to have a baby girl or a baby boy.

Some mothers may only want a girl and other may only want a boy. There are some people feel that one sex is easier to raise over the other, such as a boy they will not want the hardship of raising a girl. A family could also want a boy to carry on the family name. The selection process can also be a way to avoid disease or sickness (Shettles, & Borvik, 1997). whether genetic or not. For example if there is a family history of breast cancer, participating in the sex selection is a way to ensure that the child won't have it because the woman can choose a boy.

The sex selection process takes the unknown out of the equation and the parents, family, and friends can go ahead and buy for the baby with knowing what the sex is. Some scientists some that with all the fertility treatments available there is still not one that can be a 100 accurate on giving the couple exactly what they want (Shettles, & Borvik, 1997). For example if a couple choose the preimplanation a form of in-vitro fertilization this method is not a 100 effective, but it is close.
