The first Bilderberg meeting was held at the Bilderberg Hotel in Arnhem, the Netherlands, in 1954. Even though the organization holds no official name, not even a website, it is referred to as such because of this initial meeting. Their stated goal at the time was to improve on souring relations between the U.S. and Western Europe, The meeting was concocted by several people including Denis Healy and Josef Retinger. Denis Healy at the time was a member of British Parliament, who would later become Secretary of State for Defense, and then Chancellor of the Exchequer (equivalent to our Secretary of the Treasury).

Josef Retinger was a political advisor to the Polish Government. He was also founder of the European movement that would lead to the forming of the European Union. He was also a participant in the starting of the highly influential Council of Europe, which is now the oldest organization working towards the integration of Europe. The Council focuses mostly on human rights, cultural cooperation, the Rule of Law, and Democratic Development. It Consists of 47 member states and has over 800 million citizens. <http://www.bilderberg.org>

Josef Retinger approached Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands with the idea of promoting understanding of the different cultures of the U.S. and Western Europe. The First meeting in the states was held in 1959 in St Simons Georgia with major funding contributed by the Ford Foundation (which contributed in later years: '59 and '63). <en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bilderberg_Group>
