Walking into a bookstore and randomly flipping through pages of a book which is on the shelf with a tag of "Children's Literature." Those attractive fonts and pictures always make children curious about the content and give readers a profound impress. For this reason, colors seem to be an important method of enhancing the efficiency of early education. As well as in higher education, when teachers and students try to find an effective way for teaching and studying, more and more of them start to use different colors in this process. For example, highlighting, changing colors of font and background, or even using colored test paper. However, most people cannot tell whether there is a positive relation between colors and academic performance. In this essay, I am going to discuss if using colors can help students on study indeed that bases on earlier research and intense arguments.
"What is very special about reading in color is the fact that the effects found are a 'byproduct' of the reading process" (Colizoli, Murre, Rouw 7). According to people's experience and childhood memory, different colors represent different meanings for each individual. In this case, colors would affect people's consciousness because "Individuals perceive color differently" (Duggan 67). For instance, "because we learn early that red means to avoid danger, maybe it's slowing us down in detail-oriented tasks so we can do them better", said by Mr. Zhu on Augusta Chronicle. On the other hand, depending on situations, inappropriate highlights and unique optimal color would also have some negative effects or even have no effect at all. In order to improve reading comprehension, memorizing ability, intelligent and exam scores, colors should be understood and used in an appropriate way for achieving academic success.
