2. Comment on the working environment at the chemical plant
The first comment that would come to us based on the chemical plant’s working environment is ‘unethical’. The top managers, the overall work conditions and attitude of the workers can all be classified as ‘unethical’.
Firstly, they are unethical because they are blindly ignoring safety and health of the workers. This falls under occupational safety and health (OSH) which is very important in order to ensure there is none or very less job accidents, injuries at workplace, accidents and death. A company must always be responsible for the welfare of their workers because without them the company itself couldn’t operate.
Therefore, this chemical plant has an unethical working environment by ignoring occupational safety and health. They did not provide the proper gear and equipment for the workers who are washing chemical products with carcinogenic chemicals. According to the situation, by right, the company should provide goggles to protect the workers eyes. Leaving the eyes unprotected until the extent of the eyes watering due to irritation is very dangerous as can lead to eye diseases such as chemical eye burn, cataracts and even blindness. This is a very serious issue. Occupational safety and health should not be ignored because if employees are not happy and healthy, the productivity of the company will fall.
In addition to this, this chemical plant acted unethical by going against their words and not binding to the terms and conditions of the contract. Anita was only supposed to start working for them after her graduation but they went against the agreement by calling her in to join work even before her final examination. This would also affect her study time, and it is not fair to impose something like this on her in a very short notice. To make things worse, they do the same thing to all employees which is proved when Sivan said that nobody informed him on the workplace risks and hazards when he joined the plant.
Next, the attitude and behaviour of those in higher positions towards the regular employees is also very unfavourable. They are not following the proper code of conduct and are behaving immorally. Firstly, they ignore the safety and health. Next, they treat the workers badly. It seems like they only care about getting the works done and do not respect and care for the welfare of the employees. They just want the company operations to go on and do not care about others. They only look at their own benefits and profitability.
They really disrespect the workers by ignoring their safety and treat them badly. For example they speak to them in a rude way and being dictator. Words such as “Do it or I shall dismiss you!” are unfair and unethical because these managers and supervisor are putting other people at risk just because they have the power to do so. They are being selfish and careless and not doing their duties with sincerity.
Besides that, the supervisor that brushed Anita’s shoulders and winked at her is also considered unethical. It is not a proper thing to be done towards a lady that you do not know personally and can even be considered as a form of sexual harassment. This shows that workers were not given proper training on code of conduct and there was no action taken against those who behave immorally.
