Critical Thinking Application Paper

In today's society, people will learn how to deal with other people by not just reasoning with one's own views and opinions, but by ultimately taking a look at the whole picture and making an unbiased decision based on facts, evidence, and relevance. This concept will not only allow the person to earn respect, but it also show's significant signs as to being a fair-minded person who's not just doing something for their own reasoning or personal gain. Critical thinkers are people who think fair-mindedly, they subject their own reasoning to the same criteria to which they are unsympathetic. In this paper I will provide an example from my experience in applying critical thinking to a work related decision, and the importance and benefits of critical thinking in decision- making process.

Defining Critical Thinking

According to Paul and Elder (2009), "Critical thinking is the art of thinking about thinking while thinking in order to make thinking better. It involves three interwoven phases: it analyzes thinking, it evaluates thinking, and it improves thinking" (Critical Thinking, 2009). It affects the way how person evaluates the situation, the way he lives and behaves, and what decision he makes. Critical thinking appears when one faces necessity to change or improve surroundings. To make a decision - and evaluate consequences of this decision - one uses critical thinking. Critical thinking is carefully deliberated, well-weighted decision in respect of any judgments - whether person should accept, reject or defer it; and the degree of confidence, with which he is doing this decision. Its skills become significant especially nowadays, when the world is changing rapidly, and the ideas of globalization are spreading everywhere (in consideration of business environment). These facts require the ability to make crucial, difficult decisions fast and efficient. For instance, to stay on the top - increase productivity and competitive advantage - organizational manager must rapidly process multi-sourced information from the market, from people, and from systems, and make the right decisions. Indeed, unconsciously each person makes various decisions on a daily basis. Even one's passivity, silence, nonintervention, and decision to stay away can lead to injustice. Thus, critical thinking differs from routine, automatic thinking by the necessity and importance to make a decision.

At the time of necessity to make a decision human's brain starts processing thousands of pieces of information simultaneously, thus thinking creatively - framing the problem, making the decision, and evaluating the decision (Decision Making Steps, n.d.).
