Cultural Diversity Presentation
Introduction:
School systems are melting pots of nationalities. Students need a peaceful environment to learn at school, being that they spend at least 185 days at school learning together. It is vital that parents and teachers unite together to provide the best education possible for our future generation. In years past parents of non-dominant groups were often left out of the process of their child's education, but in today's society non-dominant families or groups are often encourage to participate in a child's education, it gives parents the opportunity to collaborate with teachers to develop strategies for the learning process of their child and the opportunity for parents or groups to expose and educated other children about other cultures. Multicultural lessons or activities will help unite respect, feelings, and a sense of belonging of all students within the school. Within this paper I will include three different presentation and activities that involve the participation of students, teachers and parents.
1st Presentation/Activity
The Feast of Cultural
A. Purpose of Activity: The purpose of this activity is to bring both parents and students together to share and enjoy a festival occasion in a relaxed atmosphere. Students will have the opportunity to become better acquainted with their fellow classmates while parents will have the opportunity to share some culture experiences with the class and parents. It will provide opportunity for parents to meet other parents from within their child's class, and it will provide the opportunity for parents to become better aquatinted with the teacher and administrators in a non professional way. I believe this would be an excellent opportunity for parents to build a social network with other families and school staff, and it could help build the parents confidence in taking part in other school activities in which their child participates in.
B. Description of the target group: The target group would include all ESL students and teachers, the parents of ESL students, the principle and assistant principle from the school, teachers and students of the child's homeroom and other staff members who may be involved or will become involved with the child's learning. This is an excellent opportunity for all invited to learn about the different culture's within the school, but the opportunity for all to socialize in an relaxed and informal environment to become better aquatinted.
C. Explanation of Activity: This activity would include all ESL classrooms within the school, all ESL students would be required to talk with their parents and fill out a simple survey on any recipes and decorations that are a part of their culture, along with this survey there would be a letter attacked explaining the assignment including questions for the parents to fill out. One question would be the date and time of the event, parents would have one of three dates and times to choose from. This will provide an opportunity for the parents to plan for this event, and a yes or no question for preparing a dish for the event with space provided to include the ingredients, along with volunteering to help students make decorations. These letters would be written in the parent's native language along with English to make sure parents understand what is taking place. Once the children have completed their survey they will first decide what decoration to research. Included in this research students will find out the origin and why it is so popular within their culture, along with directions to make this decoration. The students will the write a short essay on their chosen decoration. Once completed the students will begin their research on the cultural food of their choice to find out its origin and why it is so popular within culture. This information will be included in the students essay on decoration. Each ESL student will be included in a video explaining either the decoration they made or the cultural food that was prepared.
D. Time Frame: The time frame for this event would over a four week period, allowing students to research and prepare for their presentation. The actually event would start in the early evening and last a couple of hours, the video would play during the meal, and all would be encourage to
