Behind the disaster of the challenger space shuttle, some of the researchers found there was lack of communication between the engineers and the mangers. Some of them there was insufficient provision of upward communication outside the chain of command. There was also a suggestion that status differences between engineers and mangers and between upper and lower level mangers might have played a role in hindering upward communication. This fatal accident might have avoided if the communication flows were fair, free and ethical. And this is all about behind the deadly challenger space shuttle accident.
There were a lot of similarities between the accident of the challenger space shuttle and the case of the British Petroleum (BP). This accident was also the result of bad management and communication breakdowns between the responsible project mangers and the top managers who were not aware of the fact because of they failed to share important information and at the same there were huge gaps in monitoring offshore drilling. Oil companies are not even required to report accidents unless they are on the scale of the blowout out at BP's Macondo well.
So we understand that communication is important for the internal functioning of the organization and for interaction with the external environment as well. In an organization, managers should have the information necessary for doing a good job. The information may flow not only downward or upward in the organization structure. Communication is hindered by barriers and breakdowns in the communication process. Thus at the end of the case analysis we can say whether it is a short term goal or long term or the MBO; any goal of an organization can be fulfilled with building the goodwill if the activities are performed:
Good planning and well clarified assumptions
Clear flow of information
Good monitoring & controlling over time being
Maintain ethical practices through out the organization
