In the beginning of the movie the Dead Poets Society, Neil is being told by his father that he needs to drop some extracurricular activities. He really doesn't want to do that because that's what he wants to do but his father is the boss of him. He tries to argue with his father but he knows that is disrespectful so he agrees with his father and then goes about his business after his parents leave. He then enters Mr. Keating's class and he is touched by the phrase "Carpe Diem" which means seize the day!
Neil then begins to apply this to his life. He doesn't do it to defy his father but he wants to do what he wants too for a change. He decides to "seize the day" by doing something he has always wanted to do. This is to be in a play and they are putting one on at a place not too far from his school. He at first is afraid what his father might think but he decides against it. He is cast in Shakespeare's "A midsummer night's dream" as the main character. He is so thrilled he had finally done something to make his self happy! This proves that you have to make the most of your life and this applies to Neil largely by finally doing something that pleases him and not his father.
Anyone though could and should apply this in their everyday life. You cannot let someone else run your life. It's good to be nice but you cannot let people run over you. My parents only want the best for me and do not hold me back from things I want they support me 100% in everything I do. Whether it is dance 3 nights a week or piano and voice lessons, they want me to be happy. Also you have to takes risks and try new things. Never let anything hold you back and live your life to the fullest!
So whatever you decide to do with your life... Have fun and take risks, but be safe! "Carpe Diem"! Always remember that and apply it to your life daily!
