DEFENSIVE PHILOSOPHY

We base our defense out of a multiple Split 4 Defense. The multiple Split 4 offers us a sound gap control defensive package against any offensive formation based upon the ability of the package to be modified with limited difficulty. The package consists of 4 defensive lineman, 2 inside linebackers, and a 5 spoke secondary.

Outstanding defensive teams seem to be powered with high octane Enthusiasm. Enthusiasm is a state of mind. It is an attitude. Attitudes are contagious. Team results in a positive attitude which in turn breeds confidence and removes fear and doubt. A positive attitude brings lofty goals within the team's reach, thereby making any task achievable regardless of the odds. It is our contention that defensive football players possess an instinctive robust attitude toward physical contact. Aggressiveness and a competitive nature seems to be qualities that are imperative for our style of defense.

THE THEME FOR THE DEFENSIVE STYLE WE WILL EMPLY IS P.S.S.

We will contribute to the total team winning concept from the defensive side of the ball with our intimidation and total domination of our opponents. In order for us to accomplish this goal, we must utilize the concepts of flying to the football and creating havoc upon arrival. We want to control what the offensive team does, we will dictate to them. We want to be known as the P.S.S. Defense!!!

PURSUE-SWARM-STRIKE

Much has been said about the ability of a defense to pursue the ball carrier. We WILL take this one step further. "PURSUIT" (i.e. track, chase, seek, hunt) by all eleven men on the field must be first and foremost. From there we need to "SWARM" (i.e. infest, plague, invade, overrun) the ball carrier. Once arrived we must "STRIKE" (i.e. smash, assault, attack, inflict, annihilate) the ball carrier and make him pay for his actions. We want to "ATTACK" the ball carrier from all angles on the field. It is a state of mind, yet an extremely vital part in our domination theory of defensive football.

You must protect your area (designated gap) as you set yourself on a collision course with the ball carrier. This is an important aspect of flying to the football. Consider yourself a car driving through a flock of birds. Instead of charging forward, dodging people in finding the ball; destroy the blockers as if they were birds and you were the car. Play behind your pads and into a collision course and "STRIKE" THE BALL CARRIER! Again, it is a state of mind. If you can't or won't "hit", defense is not for you.
