For Dewey, teaching all information to students without how these information can be used to deal with daily problems decreases students attention to the lessons. Dewey says that interest increases the effort for problem solving. Hence the education should be given to the students based on their interests. While childeren development in early stages, after they accomplish how to understand their senses, they start to imitate the parents daily routines. Also they start using tools. Dewey says that childeren do not only imitate the people, they have aims. The source of their aims is the natural interest. Traditional education does not based on students interests and also daily problem solving. Hence the schools are isolated from the life outside its borders. Hence the students are bored because of this isolated life. Dewey emphasize that the education is two way. The daily problem solving should be useful at school life and knowledge gained at school should be useful outside the school. Hence the school should provide the information that the community, that school is belong to, needs and uses these information. Therefore, the education should be based on stundents interest and community's need. But, how?
Dewey says that human starts to think when they encounter a problem. He starts to search the events that effects the problem, construct a hypothesiss and try to verify it. If it fails restart from constructing hypothesiss. Hence, the education uses this natural way for teaching. Divide children into the groups they have same interest then give some problems that they can solve, then they start to solve them. If the diffuculty of the problem is above their knowledge they start to research new methods for solving the problem. hence their new experience provides them new knowledge.
These ideas help Dewey for foundation of the Laboratory School at University of Chigaco.
