Case 1.1: Drexler's World Famous Bar-B-Que
1. What role do values play in how Drexler's Bar-B-Que interacts with its neighbors and
customers?
After reading the passage about Drexler's, it was evident that the family run business has a
sense of community involvement with a foundation stemming from strong family morals. James
Drexler learned "from the ground up". Currently, the restaurant is managed by family members
and is run by Mrs. Scott. Mrs. Scott's influence spreads honesty, hard work, fairness, respect,
and faith. Mrs. Scott holds herself to the same standards as all of her employees, which is a very
strong individual characteristic of a leader. All of these traits are very notable morals to have,
especially when dealing with a family business. In part, I think that this justifies the statement
that Drexler's, "...is in the neighborhood and is of the neighborhood". The family run business
has been in the same area for a very long time and it has had an area of influence upon the
community. Reading about how the restaurant staff is personable is also a good value. Mrs.
Scott is warm and welcoming, which also attracts business. As our text explained, "...the
behavior of employees is the key to achieving effectiveness." By taking an interest in the
community and sponsoring different organizations, it is clear that the business cares about the
community and gives back to the community. It effectively helps create formal groups by
funding them. By aggressively seeking out ways to help out the community, the community
seems to be giving back as business has doubled since expanding. The reciprocal of the formal
groups established by Drexler's seems to create informal groups of customers that are loyal to
the restaurant and eat there regularly. Clyde Drexler is even a member of the family and his
hard work ethic and celebrity status is displayed throughout the establishment. He too
participates in the day to day activities and that is very also a great value as any customer
walking in from the street could meet Clyde the Clyde Drexler. Having enough humility keeps
the business running smoothly and I believe that it also transcends down to the community.
Drexler's business demonstrates a relationship between individual values and
entrepreneurial success. The literature suggests that values, through their influence on
behavior and decision-making, are an important ingredient of success. Values shape
attitudes, which in turn influence behavior and decision-making (Connor & Becker, 1994). I
believe that values are an important ingredient in entrepreneurship and in entrepreneurial
success 1.
2. Is Drexler's an effective organization? Why?
As far as effectiveness goes, I would say that the business is effective. The restaurant is well
known in the southwest part of town. The business has regular customers and also has a
catering business. When a business has regular customers, it is a true sign of an effective
business. It demonstrates
