The peom starts off with a family gathered around a candle light singing songs and it seems like someone is playing some kind of instrument. I am not sure what. It is a winter night, maybe some time around Christmas. At the end of the poem it talks about leaves falling from trees in the fall. I think that he is referring to time passing by and death coming closer. In the second stanza the family is working in a garden getting rid of the moss, planting the garden and cleaning the pathway. It seems like there are children and adults helping out, "elders and juniors." At the end of this stanza it talks about the years passing by and the birds flying south for the winter, also meaning death. In the third stanza the family is having breakfast in the garden. I think the family has grown up because they are now referred to "men and maidens." Also there is something little that is present, I am not sure what it is either a baby or birds? The end of this stanza also refers to death, "and the rotten rose is ripped from the wall." In the last stanza it seems like the family is moving to a new house, it seems like the family has more money now because they seem to be happy. The end of this stanza also refers to death. They are buried in the grave yard and their names are carved on their stones. I think it is safe to say that the theme of this poem is that time goes by fast and so does death.
