Bulling is a form of violence most often used by grade school, elememtary school, and high school students. The typical bullying of name calling and outcasting decline the older the children get. By the time they get in to high school the bullies tend to be bigger and angrier hence physical aggression. The victim in turn has been bullied in a way that it has brought down their self esteem and they make even seem to think they deserve this type of cruelty. The definition of bullying includes: An attack of intimidation with the intention to cause fear, distress, or harm (Eaton, 2010).It also includes someone who repeatedly attacks another person or the same group of people enforcing intimidation and an unbalanced power struggle between the bully and the victim. Bullying is a huge problem with in the school community. Students are being victimized on a regular basis and solution is imperative.
90% of fourth through eighth graders report being a victim of bullying (Austin & Joseph, 1996). Bullying usually starts with name calling or threats which are detrimental to social and emotional growth at this age. Bullying often times leads to physical injury or even death as the bullies anger grows. The children that are bullied are at an increased risk for mental health problems such as anxiety, depression, lack of interest in learning, illness, avoidance of school, and increased fear . The children that are bullying are more likely to have mental health problems, anger and aggression problems, academic problems and they may show signs of violence in adulthood. Victims tend to be socially isolated, lack social skills, and have more anxiety and less self esteem than students in general (Olweus, 2007). Both bullies and victims however, report suicidal ideation. Bullying has such an obvious effect on both they bully and the victim its hard to believe that its going un-noticed by the adults in these childrens lives.
The adults and the home environment in the childs life can also promote bullying. Children who are bullies usually come from homes where aggression and negativity is normal. There are also those parents who do give a lot of love and protect their children by showing authority and setting rules using no violence as punishment. This shows the child that by giving authority they are giving love and the child make take the bully/victim relationship the same way.
Bullying in school is usually a group process that involves peers. The peers play many roles such as supporting the bully or victim. Unfortunatley the victim rarely feels supported because the peers that feel bad or guilty do not speak up in fear of the bully. So the cycle continues. Bullies get encouragement from the on lookers who do or say nothing. A lot of the time the peers within the group join in on the bullying and it gives them some sort of feeling power.
