I must say after reading the material, and looking at it in an economist way, I do think money can buy me happiness. Reasoning: first off, I am not one of those individuals who care about what my colleagues gross, that wouldn't bother me at all. I will say getting an raise and being able to pay off student loans, debts, along w/ being able to help my mom out with dental/medical insurance. I would do the following without increasing my spending habits, basically staying within my spending means as if I never received a raise.
After receiving my raise and taking care of the above obligations I put upon myself. If my colleague receives an additional raise and go out and buys a Lexus, isn't going to bother me in any way shape or form. As long as I am taking care of my business and the tasks I instead in myself I am good. Relative income would not play a part in my judgment or life endeavors. This is why employers tell employees not to discuss the pay rate of each other. If followed, you would not even have these encounterments to date.
In today's society individuals do care about relative income. I am one the few people in the world this has no impact on. This stigma is placed amongst individual whom think that an average person maybe more "SUPERIOR" than they are, not knowing they are equal. For example, within my family, they pretty much think I am rich and well off, just for the simple fact I have a stable job. I receive medical/dental insurance, along with free housing. Within my family dynamics, we are products of low income and me being in the military, I am still a product of low income. Since I am able to save money, make wise decisions when it comes to my spending they feel as if they have to work harder and hold down two or three jobs just to be comfortable as I am.
Does it make sense for people to pursue money?
This is a difficult question because answering this for more than just one person makes it hard. I see the benefit of pursuing money but you don't want that to be the reason for your existence in the world. People that only pursue money are arrogant, anti-social, and very judgmental. I can visualize someone working hard to make money just to reach a certain cap and then level off from there.
Opportunity cost- what one's sacrifice to do something. (1)
Individuals in the world that make the pursuit of money a priority in life miss out on life in general. These individuals are willing to lose the love of their life for the pursuit of money. They are willing to destroy relationships with parents and lifelong friends that have supported them. These are the people who helped build their confidence when they were down and thought the world was going to collapse right at their feet. Now these certain individuals are sitting on top of the world as if they think no one can touch them.
Marginal Utility-the additional satisfaction a consumer gains from consuming one more unit of a good or service.(2) For example, this certain person was pursuing money but only wanted to make 2 million dollars. This person has segregated themselves from society as a whole, worked hard for countless amount of years and finally reaches his/her total amount. If this person pursuit for more, and more millions of dollars, this satisfaction is going to decline with every additional penny they make after that. Reached your goal, now move on and have a life, hell get in trouble with the law or something, LOL!
