Ineffective/Effective Groups

Study groups are primary used by students. These group gathers information and learn new ideas. An advantage of being in a study group is having access to more information and a variety of ideas through different individuals giving to the group. An example of this group is my study group for my nursing class.

As a nursing student, study group have become a must. Study groups for my nursing classes are always effective and productive. There are many ways that participants of the group make sure we stay on task. We try meet at the same time every week in a quiet setting, preferably the school or Barnes and Nobles. We also keep our group small. This way we all are responsible for our part in the group. Limiting distractions are hard. We usually have one laptop to use within the group and place our cell phones on silent or vibrate. Lastly, we share responsibility for material being studied. Everyone focuses on different chapters and reviews with everyone in the group the information each individual has covered.

Besides study groups and group projects in class, group dynamics is the first group that I have been involved that I feel is ineffective. While I understand that many people are communicating in groups via web, there is no organization to this on the discussion thread. Within a company when using group communication via, everyone is given a clear assignment and a clear job description from whomever is in charge. However in group dynamics, everyone is not on the same page, many are still confused, there is no one in charge of assigning group assignments to each person and a self-elected group leader. In the next coming week, I am hoping to get a clear and better understanding but as of now I am very lost.
