Abstract

As industrial engineers our main goal is to make things better, and out of our belief in the importance of humans and their well being, we are dedicatedto carry out our study in the field of ergonomics, a science concernedwith fitting the work to the worker and not the opposite, to create a safe and efficient working environment.

Then we decided to apply ergonomics` principles to ambulance cars/ patient cabinet design, because the advantages and leads will affect both the patient and the paramedic who`s saving lives every day and his life and health deserves care and attention.

Then firstly we headed to Jordan Light Vehicle Manufacturing (JLVM) and then to Jordan Civil Defense center their main customer of ambulance vehicles; to analyze the current design of the ambulances. We found many problems related to the current layout the paramedics face, that interfere in performing their tasks, which affects the quality of health care offered to the patient and leads in the long term to health disorders to the paramedics.

In order to improve the layout and end up with a standardized one, we compared the different available standard of ambulance making; American and European standards, chose the American (KKK-A-1822) then compare it to JCD current standard.

The first step was to determine missing equipment in JCD`s ambulance cars according to the American standard.

To make improvements and come up with a better ergonomic design, we started with giving new dimensions for Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) chair, and to give suggestions about best equipment storing locations we applied safe and bad zone concept, to allow for easy and safe reach and standardize these locations which will have a profound effect on the efficiency of the paramedics. We used the same concept to find the maximum distance the paramedic can safely cover over the patient`s body.

And finally we illustrated the new Ergonomically-friendly layout, accompanied with ergonomical recommendations to elevate the ambulance cars level and class.
