Do you agree or disagree with Stephen Harper’s position towards refugee acceptance? The majority of Canadians think that Harper’s policies about the acceptance of refugees aren’t good enough to be helpful in these days of crisis and that he failed Canada, while others think that his position towards refugees is acceptable.
In order to assess how justifiable Harper’s stance towards refugees is, one must first understand his policies towards their acceptance. Due to Harper’s recent change of heart about refugee acceptance, it might be hard to understand his true position in the matter. In the past few years, the number of refugees accepted by the Canadian government has decreased, demonstrating Harper’s reluctance in terms of the recent refugee crisis. However, after the tragic death of 3 year old Aylan Kurdi and his 5 year old brother and their mother, whom, according to the news, applied for immigration but got rejected by the government, Harper changed his policies about the immigration of refugees to Canada. Not only did the Conservative government say that they will speed up the processing of refugee applications in an effort to bring in "thousands more" Syrians and Iraqis by the end of 2015, but that Canada needs to do more of everything . According to his speech during a campaign event in Surrey, B.C. “refugee policy alone is not solution to this process.” emphasizing that Canada’s military campaign against the Islamic State is essential to curbing the violence in Syria. Even after all of these changes in his policies, Harper still thinks that Canada’s immigration security should be at its highest level because these refugees are from terrorist countries.
To sum it up, we should remember that Canada is a country with a multitude of different cultures, and therefore has one of the most reasonable immigration systems. Personally, I can’t agree with all of Harper’s policies, but if he really starts to execute most of what he has planned, Canada could become a great contributor to the cause to stop the current refugee crisis.
