Ethics Codes Comparison
Introduction
Professional Counselors all have standards to follow. These standards are called ethic codes. The ethic codes are guidelines written to explain the behavior that counselors must display as a professional. There are numerous counseling professions in this world each with their own standards that share similarities and differences.
Section I
Code of Ethics of the American Counseling Association
The American Counseling Association is a professional organization that adopted written professional values for its member to abide by. These written professional values are the Code of Ethics and professional counselors must perform within the boundaries describe as it relates to responsibilities and duties of a professional counselor. The mission statement for the Code of Ethics of the American Counseling Association is "to enhance the quality of life in society by promoting the development of professional counselors, advancing the counseling profession and using the profession and practice of counseling to promote respect for human dignity and diversity" (American Counseling Association (2005). The Code of Ethics of the American Counseling Association serves the following purposes" clarification of ethical behavior to all members of the organization", "show support to the missions of the organization", 'establish guidelines that explain the ethical behavior and best practices expected of each member", "as a designed that guide each member in developing a plan of action utilizing counseling services promoting the important values of the counseling profession", and as a guide that describes how ethical complaint and inquiries are handled within the association" (American Counseling Association (2005)..
The Code of Ethics of the American Counseling Association addresses eight areas with an introduction that describes highlights of the ethical behavior and responsibilities as it relate to the section. The eight areas that makes up the Code of Ethics of the American Counseling Association are "Counseling Relationship; Confidentiality, Privileged Communication and Privacy; Professional Responsibility; Relationship with Other Professionals; Evaluation, Assessment, and Interpretation; Supervision, Training, and Teaching; Research and Publication; and Resolving Ethical Issues" (American Counseling Association (2005). The Code of Ethics of the American Counseling Association also includes a glossary at the end of the written standards to help explain to readers the meaning of some of the terms written in The Code of Ethics of the American Counseling Association.
Code of Ethics of the American Association of Christian Counselors
The Code of Ethics of the American Association of Christian Counselors (2004) is standards written to help its member provide excellent services to their clients and help improve the overall profession of Christian counseling. This is a similarity shared by the Code of Ethics of the American Counseling Association. The main goal of the Code of Ethics of the American Association of Christian Counselors is "to bring honor to Jesus Christ and his church, promote excellence in Christian Counseling, and bring unity to Christian counselor" (AACC Code of Ethics, 2004). This is a difference shared by the two associations.
