In order to benefit students and improve the learning environment, school should be extended to five years to better prepare students for college and careers. Some argue that extending school will cause students to lose interest and get bored, however the extra year would greatly benefit students by giving them extra time to think about their future careers, allowing them to earn extra college credits before they actually get to college, and letting students take extra courses.
Extending high school to five years would give students more time to think about college and the requirements of what they would like to major in. This would help to prevent students from beginning college with no real plan. Because the students had an extra year of high school to reflect on what hobbies and activities they enjoy, they have a better idea of what they may consider as a suitable future career. This will greatly help students make decisions about which courses they will need to take.
Five years would, also, give students more time to take classes for college credits while still in high school. If students were to begin college already having some credits, this would have many benefits. First, college students would be much less stressed out because they do not have to take as many courses, making their schedules much less hectic. Another benefit is that the students would not have to be in college as long as those who did not get college credits from high school. Because of this, the students and their parents would save a lot of money, and the students would be able to start their careers earlier.
More time in high school would offer more classes which allows students to develop a better understanding of the material being taught. For example, in addition to regular classes, students will be allowed to take additional courses that interest them such as math, science, foreign languages, and many others. Also, with the extra time, students could retake classes that they passed with a low grade or did not pass.
