Extending Student and Faulty Relationship into Facebook

1 Introduction

1.1 Background

As a social phenomenon, Facebook has not only taken over as the social networking site of choice for students (Lenhart et al. 2010), it has also attracted considerable adoption by corporations and academic institutions (Mok, 2012).

As highlighted by National University of Singapore (NUS), they are concerned about the faculty and student relationship extending into social platform in particular, Facebook. The administration is also deliberating on a University wide guideline for teachers befriending students (and vice versa) on Facebook.

d'Oz International has thus been commissioned to generate a report to address this issue and provide appropriate recommendations.

1.2 Purpose

This report seeks to (1) investigate the NUS Business students' views on extending faculty and student relationship into Facebook (2) identify if there is a need to implement University wide guidelines for teachers befriending students

(and vice versa) on Facebook.

1.3 Scope

The scope of d'Oz International's research will be to investigate the views of NUS Business Students' towards this issue and providing recommendations to them.

In the context of this report, extending faculty and student relationship into Facebook refers to the tutors befriending the students (and vice versa) on Facebook.

Students befriending their tutors refer to the students befriending their tutor's personal account.

1.4 Research Methodology

This report will make use of survey data gathered by both NUS and d'Oz International, substantiated with secondary data research.

1.5 Limitations

d'Oz International acknowledges that the survey from NUS may be insufficient for our research purposes as it has only part of the required findings for the report. However, we have conducted our own survey to address the findings for the report, thus mitigating the above limitation.
