Introduction
FIFA World Cup is the highest level football match in the world which is the one of the global three top races with Olympic Games and F1 (Formula One). It is a 32-team international competition held every 4 years. In 2010, FIFA decides to host the tournament in South Africa (official name: 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™) which is the first African nation to host the FIFA World Cup. It not only is a good chance to let the world know South Africa clearly, but also can motivate the economic development of the country. However, there are still some problems they have to face, for instance security problem. Therefore, this research is looking at what the hosting country-South Africa will obtain from 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™.
Methodology
I have used two methods to do the research, one is Internet research, and another is reading books. Though suffering the official website of 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa and using the Google, I found much information that I need. In addition, I also got some information about the relationship between FIFA and South Africa. These sources all help me to know more about the 2010 World Cup, South Africa and the effect of the event which includes the benefits and some potential problems to the holder.
Results
South Africa is a beautiful country and has the potential to be a wonderful location for the event. In the past South Africa has proven itself to be successful in hosting the Rugby World Cup of 1995 and the Cricket World Cup of 2003 were hosted by South Africa. The spokesman for Mayor of Cape Town realizes that 2010 would bring a unique economic opportunity to South Africa. And Danny Jordaan, Chief Executive of South Africa's 2010 FIFA World Cup Organizing Committee (OC), agrees with the principle of using the tournament to provide economic opportunities, saying there were already policies in place to ensure the empowerment of black business and entrepreneurs. To South Africa, hosting the 2010 FIFA World Cup will leave a substantial economic and tourism legacy, and revive fortunes of some associated business prospects, with the once-in-a-lifetime marketing opportunity expected to make the country a more widely known and understood tourism destination. Furthermore, the FIFA World Cup South Africa can mobilize the enthusiasm of the whole people of South Africa. "It represents one of the greatest nation-building initiatives undertaken since the death of apartheid in 1994." Jordaan said.
It is really a development opportunity to South Africa, but the security challenges to the government of South Africa is serious as well.
