From One Teacher/Coach to Another [40+ years apart]
Re: High School Sports and Teaching
Two things here.
1] I dont know if this article "Are High School Sports Dying" which is the addressed here [as a sales gimick] would be of interest to you, but over the years I have had to experience the problem from both ends of the spectrum.
As a HS or JHS coach and on the other end as a USSF lic. Soccer Coach with a team playing to get past Pico Rivera and get a shot at a national title in St Louis, there by keeping some athletes out of their HS teams.
[ Three years later as a NCAA Soccer Ref. I actually had to reject a game assignment because 8 of the 15 on the team had been on the Club Team.]
2] I hope your PV group is still Gung Ho. I trust our discussion of one, is still just between us. I had a long talk with the Dad last night and I think that kid needs to be as busy as possible.
You have my sincerest gratitude for all you can do.
Gramps
p.s.
Have a great year with those athletes.[and in your class room too.] Can you imagine 6 history classes in 5 different class rooms with a brief case as an office.... And because I had been a probation officer they made a special class of U.S. Hist. for the problem kids.
Ya gotta love 'em and I sure did.
My best kid was a girl I knew from Juvie, who had been called into the bedroom to witness the Mom shoot the Dad. About 10 years later we ran into each other at a Sams Club and hugged, laughed and cried together. You never know! The effect you have on a student/person lasts forever. (Good or Bad, the answer is in your hands)
