Gap, Inc., with outlets and factories located worldwide, is well-known as a pioneer in social auditing and reporting. However, in the 1990s, the company was repeatedly charged with running "sweatshops," where under-aged, under-paid employees worked long hours, under deplorable conditions. Rather than denying these allegations, Gap, Inc. agreed to monitor all of its factories and pledged to implement and maintain high standards with regard to human rights, working conditions, and ethical employment practices.
