Gaston County Sheriff's department recruits its deputies by advertising on the local public access channel on television. It is categorized as a county position and not a city position. We are one of the few counties in North Carolina that have not combined the local city police departments and the county police departments. People who wish to get a job within the Gaston County Sheriffs Department must have at least a two year degree in criminal justice and pay is based on the degree. Sheriff's department is responsible for crime scene homicides, suicides, and serving warrants put out by the courts.
The first step to getting a job at the Gaston County Sheriff's Department is to first fill out a job interest form along with an attached resume. Job Interest forms are available at the Reception Clerk Monday thru Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm.
When positions become available the Clerks Office will contact the person for some preliminary testing. This includes finger-printing, A thorough background investigation will also be done to check for any violations or criminal behavior. A drug test will also be given.
A hiring board determines the hiring as long as the person meets the qualifications. After successfully passing the board interview, applicants applying for Deputy or Detention positions must undergo and pass a psychological assessment, medical exam. The Office will select the most qualified applicants in compliance with all applicable state and federal laws and regulations, and North Carolina Sheriff's Education

In order to be hired the Assistant Chief Deputy Sheriff and the Sheriff have to agree on the results from all the tests. The Sheriff is the one who actually hires the new deputy's.
There are requirements in order to even apply for the career they include, Must be at least 21 years of age for Deputy, Detention and Warrant Record Clerk positions. Applicants must have graduated from an accredited high school or hold an approved GED. To be a Deputy Sheriff, you must have completed Basic Law Enforcement Training in North Carolina.
Applicants must be a citizen of the United States and a resident of Gaston County.
