Geography is about a lot more then finding places on a map. When you first learned about Geography you probably learned the basics. However, there's a lot more to geography then you realize. There are three different types of geography, Physical, Human, and Cultural. With new technology progressing every so often it has made geographers understand a lot more then they use too. Some tools that help geographers are cartography, remote sensing, and geographic information systems. To understand a big picture in geography you must first understand the little things around it.
There are four main subfields of geography. The first one is Physical geography. Physical geography studies many things such as climate, natural science, and distinguishing physical movement. We study different things like the climate, soil and vegetation because we need these things to survive. Physical geography also deals with earths physical systems, the atmosphere, the hydrosphere, the lithosphere, and the biosphere. "Physical geography underwent a quantitative revolution beginning in the 1950s, when geographic investigations became more scientifically rigorous. This revolution continues today with ever-improving geographical methods and tools like satellite-aided navigation using the Global Positioning System (GPS), and images of the earth collected from space. Another change in the science of physical geography since the 1950s has been an increasing focus on the ways that humans affect their natural environment." Lerner & Lerner,2003)
The second is Human geography. Human geography looks at humans and how we interact, the way we speak and how we build or surroundings. The physical environment has many impacts on human activities.
The third is regional geography. Regional geography studies population, customs and things like the economy. The last would be topical geography. Topical geography looks at the geography of water or minerals.
They all somehow correlate with one another. Physical and human geography allocate a lot of information together. Their study of the landscape keeps their information in concert. Geography is always changing. With new technology presenting itself every so often geographers can understand different problems. Technology will also help upcoming problems. It's amazing to see what technology has done for geography. To me GPS is a very important tool. I like to travel a lot so a GPS helps me when I happen to get lost or don't know where I need to go.
