Girl Interrupted final essay

The book, "Girl Interrupted" is about a young girl named Susanna who's 18 years old.

Susanna in a way, is mentally unstable so it seems and she ends up in a mental institution called ,

McLean.

In McLean, Susanna has no freedom. She is watched like a hawk , one example in the book is when the nurses at the hospital do checks. Checks is when the nurses check the rooms when the patients are sleeping or when there in there rooms. Susanna also doesn't have much freedom after she leaves the hospital. An example of that would be when she leaves McLean and goes into a half way home and a letter from the phone company comes stating , someone should help Susanna to obtain a telephone. Freedom is an important theme in this story because even the simplest thing to get into your hands without someones help.

In the story suffering is useful because susanna learns from her mistakes in the story. She also learns about people in McLean like her friend Lisa and Georgina in the book, she learns how they got put in there and she becomes more open minded . An example of suffering is when Susanna friend was leaving McLean and she didnt want to remember it and she had a thought of her not having bones in her hand so then she bit her hand open just to see if theres bones in her hand. Suffering like that brought her back to reality in my opinion .

In the end of the story, susanna finds peace by being free from McLean and having a stable live . She also ends up married which doesnt last long but it brought her a bit of happiness. Lisa, a friend of susannas has a kid and lives peacefully in a nice suburban place. Susanna and lisa run into each other and susanna fiinds this out. Susanna also runs into georgina , she married and lives in a place where she can have goats, she has a goat that she feeds bananas to. In the end they all find somewhat of peace in there lives.
