Ahhh! There are over 100 college aged girls screaming at the top of their lungs. Many people on the outside just do not understand. However, if you are a part of it, you completely understand what is going on. It's bid day! Bid day is the last day of Panhellenic formal recruitment. This means, the sororities on campus just got new members.
I can remember when I walked in on the first day of recruitment. Recruitment was in the Schwebel Room in Kilcawley Center. I was really scared and nervous going in there. It was awkward to go in by myself, not knowing anyone there. When I arrived, the Rho Gammas sat me down with a group of random girls. A Rho Gamma is a group of girls, at least two from each chapter, that disaffiliate from their chapter to help the new members through recruitment.
Sitting next to these girls that I have never met in my life was a good way to network. We were all nervous and did not know what to expect. To get over our jitters, we started random conversation with the normal where are you from, what year are you, and what is your major questions. This really did help with not being so nervous and trying to meet new people. It does take a lot to go into a room with so many different people and try to fit in like everyone else.
The first day of recruitment was open house. Open house is where you go visit each chapter. There are four chapters and they are Alpha Omega Pi, Alpha Xi Delta, Delta Zeta, and Zeta Tau Alpha. I got to visit with each chapter for 30 minutes. After I visited each chapter, the President and advisor of Panhel give me a paper and I had to pick my least favorite chapter. I picked Alpha Omega Pi as my least favorite.
I can remember visiting each chapter. First, I went to see Alpha Omega Pi. They were a really nice bunch of girls, but I just did not feel a connection with them. Next, I went to Alpha Xi Delta. They were a fun bunch of girls. I did like them a lot. Then, I went to Delta Zeta. These girls made me laugh. I did not feel a strong connection with these girls; however, I liked what they were about. Lastly, I went to Zeta Tau Alpha. This is where I felt the strongest connection. I knew in my heart, this is where I want to be.
The next night was Philanthropy night. Typically, on this night, we were supposed to visit three of the chapters. However, the only way to visit a chapter on this night is to get an invite back. Mandy Alcorn was the Rho Gamma that gave me my invites. I looked at the piece of paper and it listed Alpha Omega Pi and Alpha Xi Delta. I was crushed. I really wanted to be a Zeta and they did not invite me back. I was ready to just quit. Mandy assured me that I would do great things in either chapter.
First, I went to Alpha Omega Pi. There I learned about their Philanthropy, which is Easter Seals, and got to bond with the girls more. I made an effort to bond with them. Who knows, they could be my sisters after tomorrow. Next, I went to Alpha Xi Delta. I sat there and talked with some of the sisters and helped make pins for their Philanthropy, which is Autism. After I visited both
