The poem I choose is "For My Daughter" by David Ignatow. Immediately I felt a connection with the poem. I haven't lost my parents, but it is easy to imagine the grief that comes with losing a parent. To me I feel like the emotion conveyed in this poem is universal. The emotion is shown through the narrative of the dad, but I could feel the emotion that the daughter might have felt when her dad was speaking of such matters with her. When I read it I feel like the poet was trying to comfort his daughter. He wants her to know that she is loved and cherished. He doesn't want her to suffer because of his death. The dad wants her to remember him for all the good moments that had together from birth and childhood. I plan on painting or drawing this scene. Since the dad only said through birth and childhood it makes me think that the girl isn't old yet so I plan on doing an image of a girl with her dad and I will also show the night sky or maybe I'll do this scene in the future with an older girl staring up at the night sky looking at the brightest star of them all. I want to do it like this because in my first plan it is easy to notice the love that is shared between the parent and the child and in my second idea I can show what the dad meant for his daughter to do. It shows the point of view of the child instead of the father though. It shows that the daughter still cares for her dad and misses him.
