Many governments appear threatened by Google because USA brings different cultures when it came into foreign countries and those foreign governments got scared of being dominated by a larger corporation. Also, the government saw that the sponsored links are portrayed as trademark counterfeiting. Therefore, many French companies and advertisers sued Google and the French courts ruled mostly in favor of copyright holders. In Germany, they sued Google for using "Gmail" because it was registered as a trademark so they lost that case and had to change the name to Google Mail. Japan, had sued Google for censorship also, and the government wanted to have their own search engine that would obtain back some of the domestic market share and advertising revenue that larger search firms were getting.
